As the River Shannon moves towards the sea, the estuary is interrupted by a slip of wooded land which leads to a lighthouse built in the 1830s. These woods encircle Tarbert House, home of the Leslie family, its romantic view invaded today by the great stacks of Tarbert power station, which replaced a Napoleonic fort, and which now dominates the skyline
