By this wide, sandy South African beach in Plettenberg Bay, London-based architect Seth Stein has built a romantic yet modern beach house for Lucille and Richard Lewin. An ingenious use of untreated eucalyptus to clad the walls counteracts any starkness and produces an extraordinary play of light through screens

  • The eucalyptus latte screen provides privacy for the roof terrace which has an outdoor shower
    + Lightbox
  • The rear of the house is dominated by a floating rendered facade
    + Lightbox
  • The whole upper section of this house appears to float supported solely by the pillars beneath it
    + Lightbox
  • As all the windows in this house are south facing and oriented towards the beach the north facing rear of the house is windowless
    + Lightbox
  • The pool is cleverly oriented and shielded from the sun by a wall that also obscures the neighbouring property
    + Lightbox
  • A floating wall which houses a water feature juts out over the swimming pool with a view to the beach beyond
    + Lightbox
  • An outdoor wash basin is mounted against a eucalyptus-clad wall
    + Lightbox
  • The white living area becomes an outdoor room linked to the eucalyptus lined terrace
    + Lightbox
  • A recessed banquette has been built into the eucalpytus latte which shades the terrace beyond the living room
    + Lightbox
  • The eucalyptus cladding incorporates a series of shutters that shield the bedrooms on the upper floor from the sun
    + Lightbox
  • The sunlight filtering through the eucalyptus above this corridor creates an interesting pattern on the walls of this corridor

  • A close-up of the limed-wood kitchen units
    + Lightbox
  • The long dining room table separates the kitchen area from the rest of the open-plan living space
    + Lightbox
  • The kitchen/dining area is flanked by side terraces with sheer curtains draped across the sliding windows
    + Lightbox
  • A row of South African pots stands against one of the external floating walls that typify the property
    + Lightbox
  • A tailor made sunken bath designed for two dominates this ensuite bathroom
    + Lightbox
  • The bedrooms on the upper floor are shielded behind eucalyptus latte blinds that operate using a counterweight mechanism
    + Lightbox
  • A detail of the pitted and mottled surface of the poured concrete floor in the master bedroom
